MODEGEIST: The Ghost of Fashion

MODEGEIST (Muotikummitus in Finnish) is an ongoing artistic project that delves into the relationship between clothing, memory, identity, and the cultural specters that linger in our lives. Modegeist combines the German word Geist — meaning spirit, ghost, or the spirit of the time (Zeitgeist) — with the word mode, fashion. The name can be read as “the ghost of fashion” or “the spirit of fashion.” It points to fashion’s double nature: on one hand, fashion is tied to surfaces, appearance, and constant change; on the other, it carries memories, ideologies, and cultural traces that continue to haunt the present. Modegeist suggests that fashion is never only about the new, but also about what returns, lingers, and repeats — a shifting spirit moving through bodies, images, and identities.

Costume design: Threads of identity and heritage

My wearable art pieces are more than garments; they are narratives. Each costume is a journey through identity and history, reflecting how our cultural past shapes our present attire. From concept to creation, every outfit is designed and handcrafted by me, ensuring an authentic and deeply personal exploration of cultural expression.

Each creation is accompanied by a carefully staged photograph, capturing the essence of these garments in fictional worlds that inspire the imagination. The figures that appear in the images are not portraits of individuals, but embodiments of cultural memories, stereotypes, fantasies, and fears. Clothing becomes simultaneously a mask, an archive, a sculpture, and a stage. Through the lens, I bring these narratives to life. My photography captures the essence of each wearable art piece, transforming costumes into powerful visual statements. Every aspect – the outfits, the styling, and the photography itself – is executed solely by me, ensuring a cohesive vision that resonates with depth and artistry.

Photography: Capturing narratives, framing history

The Modegeist signature: Artistry, skill, and vision

By working with found and archived garments, I transform these pieces into wearable artworks that convey stories and emotions. Through this project, I aim to elevate clothing beyond mere fabric, allowing it to become a vessel for personal and collective histories, inviting viewers to reflect on their own connections with the past. The project treats fashion as both archive and apparition: something that moves through bodies, histories, and images, constantly returning in new forms. Modegeist examines a world where self-expression is both personal and shaped by inherited imagery.

My Creative Endeavors

I also work with installation art, collaborating with other artist collectives to create immersive experiences that engage the audience in unique ways. Additionally, I design costumes for contemporary dance and performance, focusing on how the visual elements can enhance storytelling and movement on stage. My work seeks to bridge different artistic mediums, fostering innovative expressions that resonate with viewers and participants alike.
